Totally versatile for any interior design, the Crystal Bay ceiling fan by Kichler Lighting inspires cool visions of nature and instant relief from the heat. As the country broils in ridiculously high temperatures, the Crystal Bay customizable fan collection from Kichler will really bring things back down to a comfortable degree. Available with six lush, leaf-shaped rustic blade options, the body of the Crystal Bay fan is offered in one of four finishes–Adobe Cream, Satin Natural White, Tannery Bronze, and Weathered Copper. This ceiling fan is also very flexible and is UL rated for wet locations, so it can be installed outdoors as well, for example on a porch or in a gazebo.

The blade span of the Crystal Bay ceiling fan measures an impressive 52″ and it hangs down from the ceiling by 15″. With this beauty in your living room or on your patio, you’ll be cool as a cucumber and living in the crystal bay in your mind every time you pull its chain. With its five blades and adjustable speeds, Crystal Bay will not let you down in the heat of the moment and the blades, inspired by natural and weathered bamboo, will keep your decor looking refreshingly stylish.

With an airflow efficiency of 103 cubic feet per minute per watt (at its highest speed), this ceiling fan is especially energy efficient–using only 54 watts to operate. Gusto Hugger Fan and Betty Page

Gusto Hugger Fan and Betty Page

GUSTO HUGGER

a blog by Alan B. Williams

Now here is fan that feels like it comes straight out of The Rocketeer. The Gusto Hugger fan from The Modern Fan Company has a classic 1940′s feel as if it had been drawn by Dave Stevens himself. Even the name “Gusto Hugger” sounds like the nickname for a prop engine plane from that era. The Modern Fan Company has a winner with this retro style fan, which comes in either a Gloss White or Bright Nickel finish. The housing for this modern ceiling fan measures 5.75″ at the top, 14″ long, and 8.5″ at the mouth. There is a contemporary lighting option available if needed, plus the corresponding controls for wall or remote control. The blades can be ordered at 46″ or 56″ spans, in white or nickel as well. The Gusto Hugger fan uses 72 watts of juice and moves 6340 cubic feet of air per minute (CFM), making it very energy efficient.

So, this is the perfect fan for the “Betty Page” in your life. Something to cool her down, if you will.

WEIRD SCIENCE® meets CAR WASH®

We came across this article featuring a fusion ceiling fan cast in the image of an automated car wash machine. The author states that ceiling fans have not changed too much since their inception. Perhaps he should check out Fanimation for their unusual shapes and designs, but I digress. Yes, companies such as the laborious Minka Lavery still crank out the same tried and true and totally dull fans for the great unwashed out there, but other manufacturers are getting creative. As with ceiling lights, the combination of new light technologies like LED’s combined with what I call the Art Center design approach of the New Online Universities make objects like ceiling fans and ceiling lights objects de arte. The Dervish lamp as pictured is clever, funky, weird, and mod, but I still suggest that this is only the beginning of the cycle. Lamps and fans can take on any shape, and I have seen them at art fairs like the Strawberry Festival in Oxnard, CA (And I even bought one myself, busman’s holiday, so to speak). The trick is to get those stodgy companies to take a design risk, and then get the UL® listing, and that really is the trick. I could see Varaluz getting into the act, because they are kinda nutty over there, anyway (and I mean that with the greatest respect). But too many of the old fogies in the biz are just that, old fogies! The concept of modern art is totally lost on them, and they wouldn’t know MOCA from mocha.

So, it’s up to you, the next generation of lighting designers, arts and craft makers, and visual effects superstars to get into the act. Start fabricating mockups and design prototypes, and find a manufacturer who might be sympathetic.
